Money, Sex and Power

Nothing new under the sun

Life and politics are multifaceted.  Pub-table talks just scratch the surface and exist to let off steam: “Those up there just want to fill their pockets!” – (S)He, however, who wants to examine the Peruvian political elite of the last twenty years, will come up with a depressing discovery.  In the most of the decisions taken money, sex and power played huge roles.

On Sunday evening I reached the last page.  In his “Antiquitates Judaicae” the Jewish historian Josephus brings the Jewish history to paper and “In the Jewish War” he narrates the events that led to Jerusalem’s destruction and the dissolution of the Jewish State in 70AD.  His comments also put the spotlight on several aspects of Roman and Greek Society.  One could describe most of the contents of his two epochal works in four words: money, sex and power.

Paul L. Maier condensed Josephus’ two lengthy classics to roughly 400 pages.  It was also a good read in Spanish.

Yesterday Diospi Suyana received a generous donation from one of our supporters from North-Rhein-Palatinate.  Under the transfer the following had been added:

“Thank you for overcoming the desire for money and power through your faith in God!”

Many of our supporters add a short sentence on their electronic bank-transfers.  But with his words Dr Reuter hits the mark.

Paul described these facts a long time ago in a letter he sent to Christians in Asia Minor: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:24-25)

At the end of the day it is the way that we live that is the real message of our existence.  The Bible says that God’s power is so strong that it can conquer man’s egoism.  If in 100 years a historian examining Diospi Suyana should be able to find signs that confirm this statement, then our work will have been more than worth it. /KDJ
