A mammoth operation at the Hospital Diospi Suyana

A story like a fairy tale

The stress and strain of the long operation can still be seen in their faces.  Urologist Dr David Brady (centre of the picture) and Prof Dr Markus Giessing have given Mario Ordonez* life the positive turn, which the sixteen year old and his parents have wished for for so long.

Recurrent colic pains had plagued the young man.  Every month his stomach became more and more bloated and despite visiting several doctors no one could diagnose the cause of his sufferings.  Due to a tightening of the ureter the left kidney was severely dammed and contained several litres of filled water bubbles.

The family heard about the Hospital Diospi Suyana through a TV report.  The journey from their home in Tingo Maria to Curahuasi is 1,200km.  A long journey for anyone, but a very painful one for an invalid who feels stomach pain going round every bend.  Lima is located much closer to Tingo Maria, but two visits to hospitals in the capital only resulted in the doctors shrugging their shoulders and in a youth, disappointed once again, walking dejected through the corridors towards the exit.

Last week the patient and his parents sat in Dr David Brady’s consulting room.  It was immediately clear for the Austrian what Mario needed: a super-class – and a not easy – operation.

But then that happened what we are privileged to experience often at the Missionary Hospital Diospi Suyana.  Again and again God sends us exactly that what we need to solve our current problem.  Markus Giessing, urology professor in Düsseldorf, happened to be visiting.  The sick patient was on the operating table the next day.  Two urologists combined their nous and skills with the aim of making the patient’s life more bearable and more worth living again.

The surgery was successful and Mario is on the road to recovery.  We expect him to be able to return home in a few days and when the family drives home to Tingo Maria everyone will be happy for each of the 1,200 km.
