Kidney saved – patient happy

Surgeon team satisfied

The Quechua Indian Donna Victoria lives with her family in the state of Puno. Over the past several months, she noticed pressure in her right flank that increased in intensity. Finally, she could no longer stand the pain and she traveled to the distant city of Curahuasi.

At Hospital Diospi Suyana, Dr. Zeier diagnosed a high-grade stenosis at the outlet of the right ureter. As a result, the calyx system of the kidney was massively congested and the renal tissue was compressed. Here, haste was the order of the day. A team led by our urologist was able to remove the constriction and cut away a good two-thirds of the renal pelvis. Then the surgeons formed a reduced catch basin for the urine and replanted the ureter.

There were two pieces of good news at the checkup:

1. the renal pelvis showed no leakage
2. urine now flowed well through the ureter well.

Result: The right kidney is preserved and the pain is gone. It doesn’t get any better than this.

The contrast medium is injected into the right kidney via a catheter (blue arrow). The contrast medium flows well down the ureter as desired (yellow arrows).
