Just After 5pm – The Ambulance Siren Wails

Friday afternoon: The ER is empty. Most staffers are on their way home. All of sudden, a commotion by the entrance. Three cars arrive, delivering four people injured in an accident.

The accident happened as follows: In a curve on the Panamericana (road), a bus, owned by the Palomino company, drives into the opposite lane. The taxi driving in that lane can’t avoid the collision. It takes about half an hour before the Curahuasi fire crew arrives to rescue the people from the car.

Once at the Diospi Suyana hospital, a team of doctors and nurses is available to help immediately; exams, x-rays and CT scans don’t take long. The hospital’s system works well and it looks like all patients will survive.

To note: Accidents like this happen on a daily basis in Peru. Those who have traveled here have probably experienced how buses and trucks drive into opposite lanes when passing through curves without considering oncoming traffic. The corrupt legal system hardly ever punishes those who are responsible. The involved bus company usually pays a certain amount to the police or the judges and the "embarrassing incident" is sorted out and done with. That’s why these type of criminal acts committed on Peruvian roads will continue.
