“I’m going to kill myself”

The gun is resting in the belt

Sunday 1st July around lunchtime: our team has made it: our satellite connection works!  Now Radio Diospi Suyana is broadcast across the Province of Puerto Maldonado.  One last photo and our team boards the pick-up heading back to Curahuasi, a 15 hour journey.

An aerial tower is all that remains.  And it does that what in future many more Diospi Suyana aerial towers will do – broadcast the best news that exists into the listeners’ houses and their life-situations.

Tuesday, 3rd July at 5:49a.m. Reynaldo is just speaking on today’s morning broadcast when his mobile rings.  A troubled man, we will call him Pedro Huaman, is at the other end.  Pedro was about to use his service pistol to end his own life.  A family tragedy had pushed him to the brink of absolute desperation.  But then he hears words on 107,7FM, the frequency of Radio Diospi Suyana, that make him stop and ask a question: “Can it really be that God has a solution even for my hopeless situation?”

Reynaldo and Pedro talk for a while.  The revolver continues to rest in the belt.  No shot is heard.  Pedro standing somewhere outside of his city catches a glimmer of hope for the first time in weeks.

On Wednesday morning we received a phone-call from one of the worst possible places in Puerto Maldonado: the city’s prison.  It is here that people, who have made life hell for others in the past, endure an existence vegetating in a different type of hell themselves: a South American prison.

“Thank you for your programme!” the prisoner just cannot stop saying it: “thank you, thank you!”

We have only been broadcasting in Puerto Maldonado since Sunday and can only surmise what blessings Radio Diospi Suyana will bring there in the future.  When one day millions of Peruvians will hear the best news there is either at home on by transistor radio whilst working on the fields.  God loves you.  Do not throw in the towel.  You will find peace in Him./KDJ
