A Quechua woman from Andahuaylas and her son arrive at the missionary hospital to see Dr. Martina’s John. The woman is worried: The 13-year old boy is supposed to be growing but she knows something is wrong.

The lab results confirm the pediatrician’s diagnosis: congenial hypofunction of the thyriod. Due to the fact that a hormone assay test was never done, the boy’s abnormal hormone levels remained untreated, resulting in poor growth and intellectual development.

If a test had been administered early and if hormone treatment had started right after birth, the boy’s development could have been normal. "Ifs" and "would have beens" are often an expression of irreversible damage. When a solution is available but the person in need can’t access it until it is too late, we wonder why.

If our lives here on earth were the only thing of importance, the suffering of this child would be unbearable. Fortunately, the bible tells us of an eternal place, where God will wipe away all of our tears: Heaven. That is why Diospi Suyana is a missionary hospital.
