“Happy birthday to you. They’re still alive!”

No empty words after two massive internal bleedings

At Diospi Suyana Hospital, we fear for the lives of our patients together. When the chips are down, we activate prayer chains. This means that many of our employees pray for God’s protection and intervention. We all empathize when a team of surgeons fights an almost hopeless battle in the operating theatre, as they did a few days ago.

Srta. Dani, mother of two young children, underwent an extremely difficult operation on her bile ducts and liver. During a severe intraoperative hemorrhage and post-operative bleeding, she received a total of 10 units of blood. The outcome was uncertain twice. On Monday, she celebrated her 34th birthday in hospital.

Surgeon Dr. Lukas Steffen, a real rock of strength, had the following to say: “Dear patient, a birthday in hospital is nothing to write home about. But the fact that you are still alive on this birthday is a reason to rejoice!” Then they both laughed and were happy.

In this context, the extremely important role of anaesthetist Dr. Natascha Lopata should be noted. If a storm breaks out during a procedure, the outcome of the operation also depends on your skill.

The operating lists at the hospital are usually full and the teams are working to the limit. Crises and complications then require an extra measure of strength. And God can give this inner strength. So we gaze tensely downwards at the operating field and direct our inner eyes upwards to the Almighty. And so a medical case suddenly becomes an unforgettable church service. We serve God and give everything we have to help the patients. Isn’t that an interesting thought, a church service at the operating table?
