The Unpleasant Follow-Up Costs

And how to deal with them

Around 200 companies from around the world have donated equipment of the finest technology to Diospi Suyana.  Unfortunately, no device lasts forever and all machines need regular service to extend their life.  Medical companies often make a fortune with service contracts and eventually the high technician costs are challenging for a mission hospital.

The Peruvian company Tecnasa imported a C-arm (x-ray machine) from Korea to Diospi Suyana in 2012.  Thankfully the owners waived all the expenses.  Two years later they did the same thing with the importation of our new CT scanner.

In recent months, there have been negotiations between Tecnasa and Diospi Suyana for the long-term maintenance of these machines.  According to the current market prices, regular checks of the CT are around $50,000 and the C-arm around $3,000.

We thank the family Del Busto (owners of Tecnasa) for their unique offering.  After a lecture by Dr. John, the rates were reduced by about 99%.  Diospi Suyana must only pay for the technician’s airfare, food and lodging costs.  The hospital lodging and food isn’t fancy.  Breakfast for the technician usually consists of milk, a bun, and a cup of quinoa porridge.  Enjoy your meal!
