Back in jail

Surgeon on the wrong track?

General surgeon Dr. Lukas Steffen is a pillar of the Diospi Suyana team. On Saturday he went to the prison in Cusco and encouraged a number of people to do the same. Social pedagogue Tobias Vanheiden and Jannik Schmidt from our workshops offered support and brought along some Peruvian friends.

What many people don’t know is that the Swiss man actually spent time in a youth prison as a teenager. The drug addict and alcoholic was basically done with life after leaving school.

But an experience in a church in the Philippines gave him a completely new twist. On Saturday, the missionary doctor spoke to around 100 prisoners. His message was clear: “What Jesus Christ did for me, he can do for you!” At the end of his sermon, 12 prisoners knelt down at the front. They consciously asked God for forgiveness of their sins and a new start in life.

No matter where we are and what we have done, God accepts us if we want him to. Our own pride is probably the biggest obstacle to coming into contact with God. /KDJ

The prison in Cusco was originally built for 1,200 prisoners. However, 3,700 prisoners are now housed there.
