The Zimmermann family’s last days before departure
Dr. Christopher and Naemi Zimmermann are needed in Peru. That is a fact. The gynecology specialist will soon be able to roll up his sleeves and get to work. His wife will work as an art therapist at the Diospi Suyana School. Of course, the departure does not only affect the couple from Baden-Württemberg, but also their children Wiebke and Theophil. Parents, friends and relatives will have to say goodbye in a few days, because for three years – according to the plans – the Atlantic Ocean and the full width of a continent will separate the Zimmermanns from their extended circle of acquaintances.
There are not many people who dare to take such a risky step. At Diospi Suyana, when researching the motives of volunteers, we regularly come across faith in Jesus Christ. The conviction that it is right to help the poor – despite one’s own financial disadvantages – is not the trend of our time. It is one thing to immerse yourself in Peruvian culture as a tourist for a few weeks and quite another to pull up stakes in Europe.
When I reach Dr. Zimmermann on the phone on Saturday, he is cleaning out the apartment with his wife Naemi. Yes, that’s how it is with Christians. They take full risks when they think that God has placed a special task in their lives.
