A Difficult Birth

Normally, a baby is born head-first. If a breech birth is to be expected, most doctors recommend a c-section. That was the plan for Natividad, a Quechua woman who was about got give birth to her 7th child.

The c-section was supposed to be done in a community hospital. But the patient got scared and ran away. It seemed as if the same might happen at the Diospi Suyana hospital. After a lengthy back-and-forth, the team, led by OB/GYN Dr. Hassfeld, decided to proceed with a vaginal birth under controlled conditions. Everything went well. Addendum: The mother had delivered her other six children at home.

We want to thank midwife Mariela, OB/GYN Jens and Christian as well as Frank Nöh, our neonatologist. Unfortunately, the father of the child missed the birth of his 7th child since he had to take care of the family’s animals.
