Eight heavy suitcases are waiting in the airport luggage area while family John is sitting on their carry-ons in the hall outside. Having arrived in Lima via Munich and Sao Paula, the four Johns are almost at home now: only one more flight, followed by a 2 1/2-hour car ride through the mountains. Suddenly, Dr. John’s mobile rings.
Dr. Brady is on the line, getting him up to speed on an interesting medical case. When they hang up, the evening program for the OR-team stands.
Eight hours later: An animated group has arrived in OR #1. Dr. Kuraguntla and pediatrician Dr. Nöh turn on the anesthesia equipment. Ulrike Beck has set the instrument table. Deborah de Haan is this evening’s "hopper." Dr. Brady and Dr. John are getting ready to open the stomach of the Quechua woman on the OR table. Dr. John’s suitcases remain unpacked. That’s life at the missionary hospital Diospi Suyana.
