Dr Jens Haßfeld remembers

Quotes from his speech held last Sunday

At regular intervals Diospi Suyana is responsible for the weekly hoisting of the flag.  This ceremony, which is held on Sunday mornings, is a compulsory exercise which also other institutions in Curahuasi shoulder.  In solidarity with Curahuasi’s traditions our hospital staff and the pupils of our Colegio parade on the city’s central plaza, striving to make a more or less good impression.  Last Sunday the celebration was once again flying under Diospi Suyana’s flag.

In his address Dr Jens Haßfeld explained graphically what it means to “serve”.  While working as an assistant doctor in a German Catholic Hospital the nuns’ selfless service left a deep impression on him, especially since some of them were well over 70.

His second example happened years ago at the Hospital Diospi Suyana: a caesarean in the middle of the night.  The members of the team are knackered and want to get back to bed a.s.a.p.  When suddenly paediatrician Dr Martina John appears and, wanting to examine the new-born baby, cheerfully says: “We are here in order to serve!”  A young Peruvian doctor, hailing from Lima, standing at the operating table, cannot believe her eyes that at this unearthly hour of the night the director of the hospital is on site, since she had never come across something like this in Lima.

Christian faith must be spelt out in one’s everyday life.  One gets sick and tired of theoretical faith pretty quickly.

Hospital staff.
And, not to be missed, the pupils of the Diospi-Suyana-School.
