The world’s capital of aniseed

Curahuasi

Since time immemorial aniseed has been cultivated in the high valleys of Curahuasi.  In the month of April the white flowers cover the fields and spread a pleasing aroma.  Aniseed is used in many bakery products and can be added to spirit drinks.  The medics value the mucolytic effect of this cultivated plant, which also has a calming effect on the gastrointestinal tract.  The perfume industry has also discovered aniseed for itself.  Aniseed oil is also known for its weed-killer characteristic!

Curahuasi’s mild climate favours the cultivation of aniseed.  As soon as one enters the city one sees industrious tradespeople selling aniseed in small bags, also as tea. (Picture Christian Bigalke)
